Glenn Dregansky, DO, FAAFP

With a military background, Dr. Glenn Dregansky trained and has practiced in a variety of settings throughout his family medicine career of 40 years.

After earning his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1981, he joined the U.S. Army and completed family medicine residency at the Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Georgia.

Post-residency, he served one year as a clinic commander in Hohenfels, Germany, and then spent two years as Chief, Emergency Services, U.S. Army Hospital Nuremburg.

After separating from the Army, Dr. Dregansky worked for 10 years as a private practice family physician, 17 years as an employed physician, was the medical director of a managed care plan, and then was the medical director of a head injury and spinal cord rehabilitation program while still practicing family medicine. He then served as director of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine's family medicine residency program in Kalamazoo in 2016-2019.

Dr. Dregansky retired from the WMed family medicine residency program in Battle Creek in July 2022, where he taught full time, sharing his experience to help the next generation of family physicians develop their art of practice.

“Throughout my career, I have most enjoyed the long-lasting relationships and multi-generational care that we only find in family medicine,” said Dr. Dregansky. “The last eight years as a family medicine educator have given me the opportunity to pass on many lessons I learned from patients and colleagues through the years.”

With a long history of interest in addiction medicine, Dr. Dregansky, at the age of 67, pursued Addiction Medicine board certification in 2020. To help him through the certification process, he sought the assistance from MI CARES, a collaboration between Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and Spectrum Health that guides and supports healthcare providers through the Practice Pathway program for Addiction Medicine sub-specialty.

His leadership positions at the Academy have included volunteer member on numerous committee, trustee on the Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan Board, and director, treasurer, speaker, vice president, president-elect, and now the 2022-2023 president of the MAFP Board.

“In my role as MAFP President, my primary goal is to get on the road to meet with as many members, residencies, and student family medicine interest groups as I can. This is the first time in many years that the president doesn’t have the constraints of full-time practice, and I plan to use that time to reach out to members. I look forward to working with the full Board, MAFP Chief Executive Officer Karlene Ketola, MSA, CAE, MAFP staff, and committee volunteers to continue to shine the light on the many wonderful, selfless accomplishments of the members of MAFP.  Together we have so much to give to our patients, fellow members, and the communities in which we live. It is a great time to be a family physician in Michigan.”
