The 2025 Michigan Future of Family Medicine Conference Draws Record Attendance

The 2025 Michigan Future of Family Medicine Conference & Residency Connection proved to be the largest yet, with more than 100 students in attendance and 25 residency programs exhibiting at the Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel on Sept. 13. The event brought together medical students, residents, and family physicians from across the state for a day of connection, learning, and inspiration.

“This was a great way to provide students with the variety of career pathways that being a family physician can open doors to,” said Mark ‘Mustafa’ Hamed, MD, MBA, MPH, FAAFP, who served as the Emergency Medicine small group leader.

Students had the opportunity to connect directly with residency leaders, explore training opportunities, and take part in hands-on workshops and small group discussions led by family physician volunteers. Highlights included an engaging residency fair, hands-on clinical workshops and dynamic round-robin discussions exploring 17 areas of focus within family medicine.

“The MAFP conference was extremely well organized. All of the staff, physicians, and faculty were warm and welcoming and contributed to a great experience,” said an M1 student participant from Oakland University. “The hands-on workshops were very interesting and useful, even for specialties besides family medicine.”

Students shared the following highlights from their experience:

  • “The workshops were definitely my favorite part. I learned so much, and it was a unique experience.”

  • “I loved hearing from faculty with different niches. Additionally, the networking time was very useful for exploring programs in the area.”

  • “The extreme welcoming and kind nature of each and every faculty, members and organizers of this conference.”

  • “The residency fair was a great, wonderful opportunity to interface more with the programs. The skin biopsy workshop was also very well done.”

Thank you to the Southeastern Michigan Academy of Family Physicians for sponsoring this event. We also want to extend our gratitude to all the residency program and exhibitor representatives, clinical workshop volunteers, and small group discussion leads. Finally, thank you to the FMFM Student & Resident Education Committee for their planning contributions.
