Dangerous Medical Malpractice Changes Advance in Michigan House Over Physician ObjectionsFor decades, Michigan’s tort reforms have provided critical stability and predictability for physicians and patients alike, ensuring a fair and balanced legal system while maintaining access to affordable, high-quality care. These reforms, which were passed in the early 1990’s, were the result of years of persistent advocacy to address a liability crisis that once threatened Michigan’s healthcare system. Now, last minute legislation is threatening to unravel these reforms during the Michigan Legislature’s current lame duck session. On Wednesday Dec. 4, the Michigan House Judiciary Committee brought up House Bill 6085, along with a slate of other legislation. MAFP and other physician advocacy groups attended the committee meeting to voice opposition to this dangerous legislation. While there was very little time for testimony, President Dr. Rachel M. Klamo submitted written testimony on behalf of the MAFP. Physician advocacy groups did succeed in getting HB 6086 dropped from the committee schedule, showing once again the power of our collective voice. House Bill 6086 would have broadly increased the considerations that went into calculating non-economic damages. Now your help is needed again to ensure that these changes do not make the next step in the Michigan House of Representatives.
